gas chamber

The rooms in which people were murdered with Zyklon B, a poisonous gas. There were seven in all in the Auschwitz camp complex: Crematoria I – V and two converted farmhouses: Bunker 1 (Red House), Bunker 2 (White House). They had gas-tight doors with a peephole, equipment for introducing Zyklon B (feed ports), and in some cases ventilation systems as well, to suck out the air. From early 1942 to the late fall of 1944, more than one million people were killed in the gas chambers, mainly Jewish women, children, and elderly people.
